Dental
Identification
Dental
identification is an excellent method of establishing the identity of a
person when conventional means cannot be used. Bodies that are badly
burned, skeletonized, decomposed, or grossly traumatized can be identified
by analysis of the unique characteristics of the teeth. Indeed,
human identification is the most common role of the forensic dentist.
It is important to establish the identity of the deceased individual for
family, friends, law enforcement agencies, insurance companies, and legal
proceedings. All of our consultants have extensive experience in
the field of dental identification.
Bite
Mark Analysis
Bite
marks are patterned injuries in skin or other substances produced by
teeth. The analysis of bite marks is based on the premise that the
human dentition is unique to the individual. The forensic dentist
collects, examines, and preserves evidence from the patterned injury and
compares it to the unique dental characteristics of suspected
biters. Not all bite marks have enough evidentiary value to make
them suitable for detailed analysis. "Good" bite marks can
be valuable in establishing whether a suspect can be included or excluded
in a pool of possible biters. Meticulous evidence collection and
objective analysis are critical in cases involving possible bite
marks. The experienced forensic dentist can be a valuable asset in
these cases.
